Silence Nourishes the Soul

Silence Nourishes the Soul

They say silence is golden. I am not sure I ever understood that phrase until the last several months. I am one of those people that really could not stand the sound of silence. To me silence was deafening. I am not sure that complete silence even exists. Try sitting in a room with nothing on. You will still hear at least a hum of noise. At my house it’s the clock ticking and the ceiling fan hum mostly.

The reality is, I needed the noise to block out the sounds in my own head. The voices that told me I am not good enough. The voices that said that I am a failure and will never succeed. The voices that said no one likes me. You get the picture. So the noise, typically music, helped me to focus my mind on other things. It helped to distract me.

The music I usually chose and still do is contemporary Christian praise music, which is not a bad thing at all. What better way to take your mind off things than to place your mind on praising Jesus, right? I realize the voices are just schemes of the enemy. It is not the truth that I am hearing. Those things are not what God says about me, who He says I am.

2 Corinthians 10:4-5 (NKJV) – For the weapons of our warfare are not carnal but mighty in God for pulling down strongholds, casting down arguments and every high thing that exalts itself against the knowledge of God, bringing every thought captive to the obedience of Christ

Psalm 46:10 (ESV) Be still, and know that I am God

The enemy also likes to use the noise to keep you from hearing the voice of God. God speaks in a still small voice not by yelling in your ear. It would be like trying to hear a single whispered voice across a very crowded room. We have to still our minds as much as our bodies sometimes to be in a place to hear God. To be able to lean into Him to hear that soft voice.

In the last several months, I have found more peace in the silence and stillness at home. After working all day I enjoy the quiet. I think the silence is God’s way of giving us rest from all the noise. Just like our bodies need a rest day so do our minds. I think this is even more evident after this last year dealing with the COVID pandemic and all that we are still dealing with from the pandemic.

Everything has its wonders, even darkness and silence, and I learn whatever state I am in, therein to be content. (author: Helen Keller)

If you face God in prayer and silence, God will speak to you. Then you will know that you are nothing. It is only when you realize your nothingness, your emptiness, that God can fill you with Himself. Souls of prayer are souls of great silence. (author: Mother Teresa)
