Friends

June 8th is celebrated as National Best Friends Day. Who knew? There’s a day for everything. Having a best friend is truly a priceless gift. Someone to laugh with, cry with, shop with, and do all kinds of crazy things with. Like, Thelma and Louise. Talk about your doing crazy things together. Mercy! Before them there was Lucy and Ethel. They were always good for laughs and some hijinks. But even before them, there was Mary and Martha. Two sisters that shared a love for Jesus and family. Then there was Naomi and Ruth. Now theirs was a friendship like no other. They were from different backgrounds, different ages, and different beliefs. Yet they were close friends.

Their’s is a story of hardship that for most people would have separated them assuming they’d ever become friends to start with. Ruth was Naomi’s daughter-in-law. That alone for most people would not make them friends. They were both widows. There was no tie to bind them since Ruth’s husband was dead and yet the love between them was more than enough. Ruth was a daughter of Naomi’s heart as well as her close friend. Ruth could have gone back to her homeland to be with her people but she chose to stay with Naomi, the woman who was as a mother to her and a friend.

Ruth 1:16 (ESV) – But Ruth said, “Do not urge me to leave you or return from following you. For where you go I will go, and where you lodge I will lodge. Your people will be my people, and your God my God.”

Because of Ruth’s loyalty and Naomi’s guidance, Ruth later becomes the wife of Boaz and has a son named Obed. He has a son named Jesse who then has a son named David, that becomes King of Israel. If Ruth had chosen to leave Naomi she would not have been part of the genealogy of Jesus.

Most days of the week I get to enjoy having coffee with a friend at a local coffee shop. We have been doing this for several years. The thing is she is 29 years older than me. She is my parents age. But the age difference has never mattered one bit. Our differences have never mattered. Over the years the only thing that has mattered is our love for one another and the things we have found that we have in common. And our love of coffee. We pour into one another. We laugh, we cry, we support one another. Through life’s ups and downs, we know we can count on each other.

Do you have a Naomi in your life? Someone who guides you with Godly wisdom. Someone that wants the best for you. We as women need other women for support, we need encouragement, we sometimes need to vent too (yeah you know we do). Sometimes we just need a friend to give us that push to do what we know we need to do but are too afraid to do. Having a friend that is further along in their relationship with God and can help guide us in our walk is such a tremendous gift as well to help guide us along life’s journey. Do you have a Ruth in your life? Someone you are helping to grow in their faith. I believe it is just as important that there is someone you are helping to guide as well. Maybe not even a younger woman but someone younger in the faith.
