It Is Finished but It Ain’t Over

As we come to the end of the week, we move from Jesus’ triumphal entry into Jerusalem to the cross. We move from Hosanna! Hosanna! to Crucify! Crucify! Betrayed by a follower, a close friend, to being denied by another close friend.

Judas had already betrayed Jesus in his heart before he ever sold Him out to the Pharisees for 30 pieces of silver (the price of a slave). He had sat under Jesus’ teaching and seen all the miracles that Jesus had performed and still he betrayed Him. How many of us have done the same?

Peter said he would never deny knowing Jesus. That he would die with Jesus before he would deny Him. Three times he denied knowing or associating with Jesus. How many of us have done the same?

In the Garden of Gethsemane, Jesus asked Peter, John and James to watch and pray while He went a little further to pray alone. They could not even stay awake and pray for an hour. How many of us have done the same?

Oh but the prayers in the Garden. Jesus shows us once again what it is to be in perfect submission to the Father’s will. Matthew 26:39 And he went a little farther, and fell on his face, and prayed, saying, “O my Father, if it be possible, let this cup pass from me: nevertheless not as I will, but as thou wilt.”But also in John 17 we read that Jesus prayed for His disciples and for each of us. Even as the hour was swiftly approaching for his betrayal and death on the cross, He was thinking of YOU and ME.

Such love He showed us, the ones that were beating Him, berating Him, mocking Him, and nailing Him to the cross. Romans 5:8 – But God proves His love for us in that while we were sinners Christ died for us. And make no mistake about it friends, we may not have been there physically but it is our sins that did that to Jesus, our Savior, our King.

He bore our shame, our pain, our punishment, even our death out of His great love for us. Greater love has no man than to lay down one’s life for another.

He laid down His life for us after crying out “It is finished”. Matthew 27:50 says And Jesus cried out again with a loud voice and yielded up his spirit.” Even in this no one took His life, He willing gave it up for you and for me.
