Everybody Knows Your Name

Everybody Knows Your Name

Sometimes you want to go

Where everybody knows your name

And they’re always glad you came

Our troubles are all the same

You want to be where you can see

You want to be where everybody knows your name

Be glad there’s one place in the world

Where everybody knows your name

And they’re always glad you came

You want to go where people know

People are all the same

You want to go where everybody knows your name

I heard these words on the drive in to work this morning. You may recognize the words from the theme song to Cheers. I’m sure several of us are quite familiar with that 80s sitcom. It was centered around a bar but it was a place where these people from different walks of life came together with shared focus. They had a sense of belonging there. They had a sense of being equals no matter their status in life. Blue collar workers and professionals sharing life and struggles.

We all have a desire to feel like we belong somewhere. To feel like we are a part of a group. To feel included and not overlooked. Honestly, this is something I struggle with. I don’t always feel like I fit in or included in the place where I should be. At times I feel overlooked. Since I can be a little shy especially on groups, this can be rather difficult.

No matter where you come from or what struggles you have gone through, we are all in this together. No one should ever feel left out or overlooked. We need to call people by name and let them know they belong. Let them know we are all struggling in our own ways but we will come together and support one another. That is community. We are made for community. We are better together.
